- India is transitioning from being viewed merely as a country with potential to a significant global player, showcasing its transformation during the BRICS summit.
- The country is leveraging its advancements in technology, particularly in digital infrastructure and a robust startup ecosystem, to establish itself as a leader in innovation and manufacturing.
- India's competitive advantage lies in its skilled workforce, which is increasingly finding opportunities domestically, alongside its growing manufacturing sector that enhances its global image.
- The BRICS summit presents an opportunity for India to reshape its narrative on the world stage, emphasizing its cultural richness and economic capabilities while aiming for sustained growth and innovation.
For years, India has been spoken about as a country with potential. That description is increasingly becoming inadequate. India today has the scale, talent, technology and ambition to influence the global conversation—and hosting the BRICS summit provides an opportunity to showcase that transformation.
From Potential to Global Power
There was a time when India's global image was largely built around its population, its democratic credentials and its pool of English-speaking talent. Those remain important strengths, but the India of today is a much broader proposition. It is a country building technologies at scale, creating global businesses, producing skilled professionals and becoming an increasingly important destination for capital and manufacturing.
The BRICS summit gives this new India a stage. When leaders from some of the world's most important emerging economies arrive in India, the country is not merely hosting a diplomatic event. It is presenting itself to the world.
And that matters because national image, much like corporate reputation, is shaped not only by what a country says about itself but by what the world gets to see.
Technology Is India's New Calling Card
Perhaps nowhere is the change more visible than in technology. India's technology story began with software services and IT outsourcing. It has now moved much further, into digital public infrastructure, fintech, artificial intelligence, space technology, deep tech and an increasingly sophisticated startup ecosystem.
The scale of India's digital transformation is particularly significant. The country has demonstrated that technology can be deployed not just for a small, affluent population but across hundreds of millions of people.
That ability to build technology for scale could become one of India's most powerful global assets. The world is looking for solutions that are affordable, adaptable and capable of serving large populations. India has already been experimenting with that model at home.
Human Intelligence Remains the Biggest Asset
Technology, however, is only one part of the story. India's biggest competitive advantage may still be its people.
From scientists and engineers to doctors, entrepreneurs, designers, financial professionals and corporate leaders, Indian talent has increasingly become part of the global workforce. Indian-origin professionals occupy influential positions across technology, business and academia around the world.
But there is an important shift taking place. India is no longer only exporting talent. It is increasingly creating opportunities for that talent within the country.
That combination—human intelligence supported by technology and a huge domestic market—can become a formidable economic advantage.
A Manufacturing India Is Emerging
For decades, India's economic story was disproportionately associated with services. That is changing.
Manufacturing is becoming an important part of the country's global proposition, whether it is electronics, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy or other emerging sectors. Global companies looking to diversify supply chains are increasingly examining India as one of their options.
This is important for Brand India because manufacturing creates a different perception. It tells the world that India is not simply a market where products are sold or services delivered. It can also be a place where products are designed, engineered and manufactured.
The Entrepreneurial Energy
Another strength that deserves attention is India's entrepreneurial culture.
The startup ecosystem has created a generation that is comfortable thinking globally from day one. Young entrepreneurs are building companies in fintech, ecommerce, SaaS, healthcare, education, mobility and emerging technologies.
More importantly, entrepreneurship is no longer restricted to a handful of large cities. Smaller towns and a new generation of consumers are becoming part of India's digital and economic expansion.
This entrepreneurial energy adds something valuable to the national brand: the perception of a country that is willing to experiment.
Infrastructure Is Changing the Experience
Brand India is also increasingly being shaped by what visitors actually experience.
New airports, highways, metro systems, digital services, urban infrastructure and improved connectivity are changing the physical experience of the country. The transformation is uneven and there are still enormous challenges, but the direction is unmistakable.
For an international visitor attending a summit, these physical experiences can sometimes communicate more powerfully than a government presentation.
Culture Gives India an Emotional Advantage
There is another dimension that economic statistics cannot capture.
India has a cultural footprint that few countries can match. Its food, cinema, music, yoga, festivals, fashion, spirituality and diverse traditions have travelled well beyond its borders.
This gives Brand India something many economic powers struggle to create—an emotional connection.
The opportunity is to bring this cultural strength together with India's economic and technological story. The modern India should not have to choose between its heritage and its ambition. Both can coexist.
The World Is Watching
This is ultimately why the BRICS summit matters.
India gets an opportunity to bring together diplomacy, business, technology, culture and human talent on one global platform. The leaders may come for meetings, but the world will also be watching the country in which those meetings take place.
The larger opportunity is to move the global narrative from “India has potential” to “India is an important force.”
That transition will not happen because of one summit. It will happen through sustained economic growth, better infrastructure, innovation, institutional strength and the ability to convert India's enormous human capital into global value.
But every country needs moments when the world pauses and looks at it differently.
The BRICS summit could be one such moment for India. And if Brand India can use that moment well, the lift could extend far beyond the summit itself.
